World Cup 2026 Bracket
The biggest tournament in football history is expanding to 48 teams for the first time. Here is exactly how the new World Cup 2026 bracket works — from the group stage to the final in New Jersey.
1. The Group Stage — 12 Groups of 4
For the first time, the World Cup moves from 8 groups to 12 groups (labelled A through L). Each team plays three matches in a round-robin format. The top two from every group automatically qualify for the next round, plus the eight best third-placed teams — creating a round of 32.
How the 32 knockout spots are decided
- 12 group winners (1st place)
- 12 group runners-up (2nd place)
- 8 best third-placed teams
That is 24 automatic qualifiers plus 8 third-place teams = 32 teams in the knockout bracket.
2. The Round of 32 — New for 2026
This is the biggest change to the World Cup bracket. After the group stage, 32 teams enter a single-elimination knockout phase. The round of 32 matchups are determined by a fixed bracket formula based on which groups each team came from:
| Match | Team A | Team B |
|---|---|---|
| 49 | 1A | 3C / 3D / 3E / 3F |
| 50 | 2A | 2C |
| 51 | 1B | 3A / 3D / 3E / 3H |
| 52 | 2B | 2F |
| 53 | 1C | 3A / 3B / 3F / 3H |
| 54 | 2D | 2E |
| 55 | 1D | 3B / 3E / 3F / 3I |
| 56 | 2A / 2B / 2C / 2D (best) | 3A / 3B / 3C / 3D / 3E / 3F / 3G / 3H / 3I / 3J / 3K / 3L (best) |
| 57 | 1E | 3A / 3B / 3C / 3D / 3H / 3I / 3J / 3K / 3L |
| 58 | 2G | 2H |
| 59 | 1F | 3G / 3H / 3I / 3J / 3K / 3L |
| 60 | 2I | 2J |
| 61 | 1G | 3C / 3D / 3E / 3F / 3G / 3H / 3I / 3J / 3K / 3L |
| 62 | 2K | 2L |
| 63 | 1H | 3A / 3B / 3C / 3D / 3E / 3F / 3G / 3H / 3I / 3J / 3K / 3L |
| 64 | 1I | 3A / 3B / 3C / 3D / 3E / 3F / 3G / 3H / 3I / 3J / 3K / 3L |
The exact third-place pairings depend on which groups produce the best third-placed teams. FIFA publishes the confirmed bracket once the group stage concludes.
3. Round of 16 to the Final
From the round of 32 onwards, the bracket behaves like a traditional World Cup knockout stage. Winners advance; losers go home (except semi-final losers, who contest the third-place play-off).
Round of 16
16 teams, 8 matches. Winners of round-of-32 matches face off in predetermined bracket slots.
Quarter-finals
8 teams, 4 matches. The quarter-final bracket is fixed based on the round-of-16 results.
Semi-finals
4 teams, 2 matches. The winners advance to the final at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey.
Third-place play-off
The two semi-final losers play one day before the final for bronze.
Final
July 19, 2026 at MetLife Stadium. One match decides the World Cup champion.
